NATIONAL MAPPING & ESTIMATION OF FOREST CARBON

Pöyry has been instrumental in developing methods for the measurement and monitoring of New Zealand's forest carbon stocks. The system incorporates satellite imagery to track annual forest change through time and precision measurements from Light Detection & Ranging (LiDAR) in order to estimate forest carbon stocks. Specifically, LiDAR technology has the ability to provide a 3D representation of forest structure and terrain from which forest productivity measurements can be estimated (basal area, volume and height).

Pöyry developed automated routines capable of processing large datasets to provide reliable and robust results.

These methods are used operationally to provide forest measurements that are used to report New Zealand's commitments under the Kyoto Protocol.
